The forerunner of the modern slip, however, appeared in the nineteenth century, when the petticoat and corset were combined into a one-piece, fitted undergarment using a princess cut.

The"princess petticoat" or "princess slip,” eventually came to be known as a costume slip, and then just a slip.

They were usually made of cotton or silk, although in the 1920s rayon was also widely used, and in the mid-twentieth century, newly invented nylon made them conveniently washable and inexpensive.

The fit transformed from a straight-cut tube to a more fitted one that hugged the curves.

While slips generally were one inch shorter than the outer garment and were not supposed to show at the hem, movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor (in the 1958 film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) gave them undeniable sex appeal.

During the swinging sixties, skirts got shorter and so did slip lengths. Slips eventually came to be seen as dated, even frumpy, old-fashioned artifacts of the past until it experienced another makeover in the 1990s. Now, it realized its full potential.

The "underwear as outerwear" trend made it the perfect staple of a cool girl’s wardrobe. Revealing and lightweight, but also casual with its spaghetti straps, either a lean or voluptuous figure could both wear them.

For less femme fatale allure and more of a tomboy grunge look, layering one over a simple white T-shirt made it a perfectly acceptable outergarment.
