Garters used to hold up stockings since the 14th century and it was worn by both sexes. But when the cancan became a fixture in French cabarets in the 1840s, this forbidden undergarment’s association with feminine sex appeal was established. A chorus line of female dancers would kick up their feet, split, and cartwheel while holding up their petticoats and voluminous ruffled skirts, revealing their embellished garters.

By the 1920s, flappers would indulge in Jazz Age sin and creative uses for garters included holding up anything from cigarette cases to flasks. In the same decade, garter belts were invented, adding even more spice to this already provocative piece.

But with the invention of tights and pantyhose, garter belts were seen as cumbersome and with the introduction of elastic in 1960s, socks held up well on their own. Nowadays, it’s seen as an ultra-feminine throwback and anyone wearing them feels like they are performing on a stage.
